Dicing with Death

Author: Stephen Senn
Edition: 1
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Binding: Paperback

Dicing with Death: Chance, Risk and Health

If you think that statistics has nothing to say about what you do or how you could do it better, then you are either wrong or in need of a more interesting job. Medical books Dicing with Death. Stephen Senn explains here how statistics determines many decisions about medical care--from allocating resources for health, to determining which drugs to license, to cause-and-effect in relation to disease. He tackles big themes: clinical trials and the development of medicines, life tables, vaccines and their risks or lack of them, smoking and lung cancer and even the power of prayer. He entertains with puzzles and paradoxes and covers the lives of famous statistical pioneers. By the end of the book the reader will see how reasoning with probability is essential to making rational decisions in medicine, and how and when it can guide us when faced with choices that impact our health and/or life Medical books Dramascripts - Dicing With Death: Three Medieval Plays (dramascripts Classic Tex. author john o connor educational level uk school key stage 3 format paperback language english publication year 12 10 1999 subject school textbooks study guides subject 2 school textbooks study guides literature arts humanities payment shipping rates returns dramascripts dicing with death three medieval plays dramascripts classic texts product category books isbn 0174325967 title dramascripts dicing with death three medieval plays dramascripts classic texts ean 9780174325963 authors o connor joh

He escaped sudden cardiac death five times before the age of 18, amazing when you consider that over 95% of people who have an episode like Matthew’s don’t survive. How did he survive five? This book details the miraculous stories of how two nurses; a gym teacher, an implantable defibrillator (ICD) and an overheated car all had something to do with keeping him alive. Yet surviving wasn’t the difficult part. Learning how to live without waiting to die would be the struggle that would accompany Matthew through his teens. This is his story, an entertaining and amazing tale of courage, fulfillment, and self-realization, unlike any other.

Sudden Cardiac Death: A Handbook for Clinical Practice (European Society of Cardiology)

This book draws on the established European guidelines from the ESC that address the key issues in sudden cardiac death, such as identifying individuals at risk prior to an episode of a ventricular tachyarrhythmia or a sudden cardiac arrest, and responding in a timely fashion to the person suffering the event out-of-the-hospital. Medical books Sudden Cardiac Death. It presents an update on what is known about sudden cardiac arrest, from basic experimental studies to clinical trials, and serves as a complement to the ESC Core Syllabus on this subject.

Topics include epidemiology, genetics, arrhythmogenic mechanisms, risk stratification, autonomic nervous system and phenotypes. It is also for families of victims and survivors of CPR. It will engage emergency personnel, others in the medical field, and anyone concerned with ethical issues of death and dying. Anyone who has ever taken a CPR course has wondered, 'What would happen if I actually had to use CPR?' In Western societies, the life-saving power of resuscitation has the status of a revered cultural myth. It promises life in the face of sudden death, but the reality is that lives are rarely saved. Medical researchers estimate the survival rate for out-of-hospital CPR to be between 1 and 3 percent. "Sudden Death and the Myth of CPR" explores the history of this medical innovation and the promotion of its effectiveness. The overuse of resuscitation, Timmermans explains, defines people's experience with sudden death, something he learned first-hand by following the practice of life-saving from street corner to emergency room. He argues that very few people are successfully resuscitated without brain damage despite the promotion of CPR's effectiveness through powerful media images. In vivid accounts of the day-to-day practices of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in one of the only studies of sudden death, Timmermans records the astonishingly frank comments of emergency personnel.Doctors, nurses, social workers, and paramedics express emotions from cynicism about going through the futile motions to genuine concern for victims' family members. If a person who was supposed to keep on living dies at the end of a resuscitative attempt, how socially meaningful is the dying? Timmermans asks tough questions and addresses the controversial ethical issues about the appropriateness of interfering with life and death. He suggests policy reforms and the restoration of dignity to sudden death. Stefan Timmermans is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Brandeis University and is widely published on the topic of health care.

Cellular Aging and Cell Death provides a thorough understanding of the mechanisms responsible for cellular aging, covering the recent research on programmed cell death and senescence, and describing their role in the control of cell proliferation and the aging process. This one-of-a-kind book is the first to combine the two hottest research areas of cell biology into one comprehensive text.

Leading experts contribute to give readers an authoritative overview of the distinct fields of cellular aging and programmed cell death, as well as to demonstrate how both fields are critical to understanding the aging process. They address the large and growing interest in apoptosis, especially with regard to the molecular signals that induce and regulate programmed cell death, and the role of apoptosis in a variety of age-associated diseases and disabilities. Throughout the book, a strong emphasis is placed on the interrelationship of the molecular, cellular, and physiological aspects of senescence.

Individual chapters discuss such topics as the role and regulation of apoptosis in development, the potential impact of cell death on such postmitotic tissues as nerve and muscle, and suggest that programmed cell death plays an important role in both pathological and nonpathological aspects of aging, including neurodegenerative diseases.

One important chapter focuses on the most recent research involving the study of telomeres, whose reduction in length with age and cell division may underlie cellular senescence. The subject of neuronal cell death is also put into the perspective of aging.

Cellular Aging and Cell Death bridges the rapidly growing fields of cellular aging and programmed cell death. This thorough, yet concise book will be of particular interest to graduate students and researchers within the fields of cell and developmental biology, neurobiology, immunology, and physiology. Physicians and medical students involved in the fields of gerontology and pathology will also find this an informative reference.
