Injury Control

Evidence-based injury prevention and control strategies have contributed to a substantial decline in the number of deaths associated with injury. Researchers studying these strategies are in need of a comprehensive source of information on all of the research methodologies available to them. Injury Control: A Guide to Research and Evaluation addresses this growing need and provides information on research tools such as injury severity scales, conducting program evaluations and trauma audits, and systematic reviews.Epidemiologists, health service investigators, trauma surgeons and emergency med

Injury Control: Research and Program Evaluation addresses the growing need for a single comprehensive source of data on all research designs available for injury control and research. This accessible guidebook includes information on research tools such as injury severity scales, conducting program evaluations and trauma audits, systematic reviews, and ecologic studies. Epidemiologists and health service investigators, as well as trauma surgeons and emergency medicine physicians who provide the post-acute care of trauma patients, will find this the only current information source focused on injury control research and evaluation.

Lifestyle Modification to Control Heart Disease: Evidence and Policy

Lifestyle Modification to Control Heart Disease: Evidence and Policy is a review and critical examination of the scientific literature on cardiovascular lifestyle modification. Medical books Lifestyle Modification to Control Heart Disease. This book provides systematic critiques of prior published research in order to clarify some of the debate around addressing coronary heart disease through lifestyle modification. It fills gaps in current published systematic reviews, particularly with respect to the cost-effectiveness of lifestyle modification; gender, racial and ethnic disparities in treatment of coronary heart disease; and multifactorial programs. It also explores existing research on disparities in coronary artery disease treatment and utilization and suggests potential solutions to address barriers at the system, provider and patient level. By summarizing research findings in a reader-friendly format, it assists health care practitioners in working with patients more effectively, improves students background knowledge to enhance preparation for clinical work, and sets a context for future researchers who want to continue to address key questions this area Medical books Lifestyle Modification To Control Heart Disease: Evidence And Policy Shepard, Do. author donald s shepard format paperback language english publication year 01 01 2009 subject medicine subject 2 medical nursing ancillary services title lifestyle modification to control heart disease evidence and policy author shepard donald publisher jones bartlett pub publication date aug 21 2009 pages 232 binding paperback edition 1 st dimensions 6 25 wx 8 70 hx 0 25 d isbn 0763749478 subject medical public health brand new paperback all orders get full access to our online status trackin

Human Cardiovascular Control

Author: Loring B. Rowell
Edition: 1
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Binding: Hardcover
ISBN: 0195073622

Human Cardiovascular Control

This is a new and comprehensive analysis of reflex and hormonal control of the human cardiovascular system that grew out of Rowell's 1986 volume, Human Circulation: Regulation During Physical Stress, and incorporates more recent findings. Medical books Human Cardiovascular Control. The goal is to assist students, physiologists and clinicians to understand control of pressure, vascular volume, and blood flow by examining the cardiovascular system during orthostasis and exercise, two stresses that most affect these variables. These stresses are employed to analyze the passive properties of the vascular system and provide a basis for a detailed examination of how these properties are modified by mechanical, neural, and humoral factors. Interactive effects of the vasculature on cardiac performance are stressed to underline the importance of autonomic control supplemented by muscle pumping to maintain adequate ventricular filling pressure, particularly during exercise. Limitations in cardiac pumping ability, in oxygen diffusion from lungs to blood and from blood to active muscle, in metabolism, and in neural control of organ blood flow are analyzed to explain how total oxygen consumption is limited Medical books Human Cardiovascular Control, 9780195073621. The unsolved mystery is the nature of signals that govern the cardiovascular responses to exercise. This is discussed in a new and critical synthesis of ideas and evidence concerning the specific "error signals" that are sensed and then corrected by activation of cardiac and vascular effectors during exercise.

Medical books Infection Control in the Intensive Care Unit . In the recent years, in fact, five new randomised controlled trials and five new meta-analyses demonstrate that selective decontamination of the digestive tract [SDD] is an antimicrobial prophylaxis to prevent severe infections of not only lower airways but also of blood. Additionally, SDD has been shown to reduce inflammation including multiple organ failure and mortality. An intriguing observation is the evidence that SDD using parenteral and enteral antimicrobials reduces rather than increases antimicrobial resistance. The aim is to determine whether current methods for the administration of chemotherapy are optimal, and if alternative regimens should be considered. The research utilizes the mathematical theory of optimal control, an active research area for many mathematicians, scientists and engineers. It is of multidisciplinary nature, having been applied to areas ranging from engineering to biomedicine. The aim in optimal control is to achieve a given objective at minimum cost. A set of differential equations is used to describe the evolution in time of the process being modelled, and constraints limit the policies that can be used to attain the objective. In this monograph, mathematical models are used to construct optimal drug schedules. These are treatment guidelines specifying which drug to deliver, when, and at what dose. Many current drug schedules have been derived empirically, based upon "rules of thumb". The monograph has been structured so that most of the high-level mathematics is introduced in a special appendix. In this way, a scientist can skip the more subtle aspects of the theory and still understand the biomedical applications that follow. However, the text is self-contained so that a deeper understanding of the mathematics of optimal control can be gained from the mathematical appendix.
